When I look around today, there are tons of things that are a part of our everyday life that, if I had been asked at their inception, I would have sworn up and down would never make it. The list is as follows:
1) eBay. For awhile, I didn’t even know what this website was. People would try to explain it to me, but I never got it cuz I thought it was retarded. Conversations would usually go like this:
someone else way more in the know than me-(SE) and ME
SE: hey, have you checked out that new site, eBay? It’s awesome!
ME: No…what is it again?
SE: It’s like an auction site, where people put stuff up for sale, and you bid on it.
ME: But…how do you hear the auctioneer?
SE: No, it’s more like a silent auction…it shows you what the highest current bid is, then you put in your bid, and hopefully you get the highest bid before the auction ends.
ME: I don’t get it. That’s dumb.
I guess what I never understood (and STILL don’t get) is how do you know that you’re getting something good? I mean, I understand the pictures thing, I just think that pics can be deceiving. And then the whole “buy it now” thing…how dumb is that?? why don’t you just buy it from a store? Or, if you’re addicted to being online, go to Amazon. (And, for the record, I still hate eBay and still never use it. Buying something sight unseen, and WORSE, trust a complete stranger to send it to you, is still the most retarded thing you could possibly do.)
2) Bluetooth headsets. These I understood. I knew what they were. And, being the techno geek that I am, I had one when they first came out. It cost me about $150, and I was stoked! Then I realized what went into pairing the damn thing EVERY SINGLE TIME. Then how much battery life the thing sucked outta my phone. And the fact that I now had one more thing that I needed to plug in at night or have a charger for in my car. And how shitty people sound on the other end of the line. I also didn’t think they were going to stick around because, well, we are a vain society. We want things that make us look good and cool. And frankly, I wasn’t aware that looking like you were talking to yourself in a public place would EVER be considered “cool”.
Because of all these things, I gave it away (to my mom, who, contrary to her prostests, still doesn’t know how to pair it to her phone, so it sits around collecting dust somewhere). And, I know what people are going to say. “they’ve fixed them now!” “they’re way better now!” “You should try one again!” And to all of those, I say “No.” I don’t want to. I like my plug in headset just fine. Even if my fiance tells me that I look like a phone operator whilst driving down the freeway.
3) iPod. I guess I didn’t think this one would stick cuz I thought it would be a lot of work to put all your CD’s on your computer, then put them all on a device…and then have to change them everytime you got a new iPod or something. Plus, I was never the walkman/portable CD player type, so it just seemed like a lot of work for not a lot of payout. And, you’ll soon realize, that’s how I make A LOT of my decisions. Is the pay out worth whatever effort I have to put in first. And, because I’m Extremely (yup, that got bold, italics, AND underlined) lazy, there aren’t too many things that make that cut. And digitizing songs to carry around with you definitely didn’t. Of course, I now have an iPod. 2, actually. One is hooked up in my car to my stereo, and the other one I keep telling myself I’m going to take to work (it just hasn’t happened yet). SO…yeah…I see the point NOW…but back then, it just seemed like a lot of work.
So…3 that I can think of right now…I know there are others…I think about them all the time, just can’t think of anymore now…
And the moral of this post is: if you want stock market advice about which companies/products are going to make it and which ones aren’t, don’t ask me. B/c I will most likely be wrong. And you’ll lose a shit-ton of money.
PS-I’m pretty sure it’s not grammatically correct to begin a sentence with “and” but, I’m also equally as sure that I started about every other sentence like that in this post.
PPS (or is it PSS?)- Thank you SOOO much to Brandy for not only making one of her friends comment on my blog, but for linking my blog in hers and telling people to check it out! That’s got to be the NICEST thing a stranger has ever done for me!
